Island Extension Unit
A Bespoke Addition to an Existing Kitchen Island
This island extension unit was designed as a bespoke addition to an existing kitchen, giving the room more usable surface, storage and everyday flexibility without replacing the original island. The aim was to make the new piece feel as though it had always belonged there, matching the scale and character of the kitchen while adding its own practical purpose.
The unit was made from solid oak and tulipwood, combining a painted frame with warm timber detailing. Its proportions were carefully considered so it could sit comfortably at the end of the island, extending the working area while keeping the circulation around the kitchen clear.
A large drawer provides accessible storage, while the open slatted shelf below keeps the piece lighter and gives space for larger items. The construction uses traditional joinery details, with painted beadboard, simple framing and classic cup handles to sit naturally with the existing kitchen.
Electrical provision was also integrated into the design, with charging points built neatly into the timberwork so the island could support modern family use without adding visual clutter. The finished piece is practical, quietly detailed and properly fitted — a useful extension to the kitchen rather than a separate piece of furniture placed within it.
