Swithland Shaker Cottage Kitchen
A hand-finished pine shaker kitchen with solid oak worktops for a traditional cottage.
Older houses often come with uneven walls, awkward corners and rooms that were never designed for modern kitchen layouts. This project was approached with that in mind, using made-to-measure cabinetry to make the most of a compact and characterful space.
The joinery was designed to work with the building rather than against it. Cupboards were fitted around the existing window, sink position and irregular junctions, with the layout carefully adjusted to create useful storage without losing the charm of the room.
The painted pine cabinetry gives the kitchen a soft, traditional character, while solid oak worktops add warmth and natural texture. Simple shaker doors, brass hardware and a Belfast-style sink help the room feel appropriate to the age and setting of the house.
The result is a practical kitchen with a quiet cottage quality. It gives the client the storage and working space they need, while retaining the warmth, irregularity and handmade feel that make older homes so appealing.
